BELOIT—Not even a rehabbing Major League pitcher could slow down the Beloit Sky Carp Thursday night.
Gus Varland, on loan from the Milwaukee Brewers, was shelled by Beloit for three runs while recording just one out in the Sky Carp’s 6-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Thursday night.
It was Beloit’s third straight win, and the squad has now put together eight wins in its last nine games to maintain a two-game lead in the Midwest League Western Division standings.
The Sky Carp trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning when Varland (a member of the 2019 Beloit Snappers) allowed four straight runners to reach after leadoff hitter Jacob Berry lined out.
Joe Mack belted a game-tying double, while Davis Bradshaw drove in the go-ahead run on a single. Brady Allen followed with a single of his own to make it 4-2.
The Sky Carp added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a Jake Thompson RBI triple, and another RBI single from Allen.
Edgar Sanchez (1-1) was terrific on the mound, allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings. Caleb Wurster followed Sanchez with two scoreless frames that included four strikeouts.
The Sky Carp will go for the series win Friday night when the two teams meet at 6:35 p.m.
Beloit will return home to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps, with the series opener set for Tuesday, May 2 at 6:35 p.m.
