FORT WAYNE, Ind. – TinCaps starting pitcher Adam Mazur (No. 6 Padres prospect) provided six shutout innings, but the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs affiliate) won a tight 1-0 contest in front of a crowd of 6,517 Thursday night at Parkview Field.
South Bend's lone run came on an RBI double by first baseman Bryce Ball in the top of the ninth inning.
Mazur shut down the Cubs' offense, allowing only four hits while striking out three. The Iowa alum and reigning Big Ten Pitcher of the Year lowered his season ERA to 1.45.
Offensively for Fort Wayne, third baseman Marcos Castañon went 2-for-4, while first baseman Nathan Martorella (No. 23 Padres prospect) doubled and walked. Left fielder Justin Farmer chipped in a double as well.
TinCaps relief pitcher Keegan Collett, on his fifth wedding anniversary, added two shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Both teams struggled mightily with runners in scoring position, combining to go 0-for-19 in the game.
Fort Wayne falls to 1-20 this season when scoring three or fewer runs.
The TinCaps are in the midst of a 12-game homestand, which continues through Sunday. Friday’s game features postgame fireworks.
