KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – A one-two punch on both the pitcher’s mound and at the plate for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (49-44) handed the home side their third victory in a row over the Delmarva Shorebirds (40-52), 5-1, Friday night at Atrium Health Ballpark.

RHP Peyton Pallette tossed another solid four innings in his team-high 16th start of 2023, striking out five in his night’s work. RHP Manuel Veloz (W, 9-1) tallied his Carolina League-leading ninth win of 2023, firing four shutout innings and striking out two with two walks along the way.

Kannapolis threw the first punch of the evening’s bout in the bottom of the first on a Chris Lanzilli RBI groundout, scoring Bryce Willits and pushing the Ballers ahead, 1-0.

Delmarva answered a short few frames later in the top of the third with their only run of the night. Luis Gonzalez sent a Pallette fastball into the right field bar for his first home run of the season, knotting the game at, 1-1, after two and a half innings.

The Ballers had no part of a tie game, breaking the tie in permanent fashion in the bottom of the third. Bryce Willits’ two-RBI single that scored Mario Camilletti and Brooks Baldwin proved to be the game-winning runs, thrusting Kannapolis to a, 3-1, lead.

Lanzilli and Baldwin each tallied insurance runs in the fifth and eighth innings with an RBI single and a solo home run, respectively, to hand the Cannon Ballers a, 5-1, advantage; a lead that proved to be too much for the Shorebirds to handle.

2022 White Sox first round selection LHP Noah Schultz will make another start on the mound at Atrium Health Ballpark in the fifth of six games on the week against the Delmarva Shorebirds. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. in the All Holidays Night showdown with postgame fireworks on tap for the evening.
