Winston-Salem Falls to Aberdeen, 12-5

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (May 20, 2023) – The Winston-Salem Dash dropped its first series of the season against the Aberdeen IronBirds in a 12-5 loss Saturday evening at Truist Stadium in front of 6,345 fans.

Winston-Salem (23-13) came firing out of the gates early, plating runs in each of the first three innings. Andy Atwood opened the scoring on an RBI double in the first putting the Dash ahead 1-0.

In the second, Winston-Salem tallied another on an RBI single again by Atwood, doubling the lead to 2-0.

Aberdeen (17-19) struggled against Dash starter Andrew Dalquist who faced the minimum over the first three innings, picking up two punch outs. Winston-Salem grew its lead in the third after Shawn Goosenberg and Michael Turner picked up RBI singles taking a 4-0 lead into the middle innings.

Dalquist continued to impress in the fourth but ran into trouble in the fifth. The IronBirds got two runs with two outs on a home run by Adam Retzbach to cut the lead in half, 4-2. Dalquist departed after five strong innings and gave way to the Dash bullpen.

Aberdeen got to the Winston-Salem bullpen in the sixth. The IronBirds plated six runs in the sixth, taking a four-run lead over the Dash and added to their advantage in the seventh with another three runs making it 11-4.

Winston-Salem got a run back in the seventh on a Taishi Nakawake RBI single, but that was all the Dash could find as they fell to Aberdeen, 12-5.

The Dash tallied 14 hits in the loss. Atwood and Turner both picked up three hits on the day, while Wilfred Veras collected another two doubles bringing his league-leading tally to 18.

The final game of the six-game series between Winston-Salem and Aberdeen is set for Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
